George C. Freeman, III, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer, joined Universal Leaf Tobacco Company in 1997. Prior to that time, he served as a law clerk for the Honorable Richard S. Arnold, Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit; a law clerk for the Honorable Lewis F. Powell, Jr., Associate Justice, United States Supreme Court; and an associate with Hunton & Williams, an international law firm. Mr. Freeman was elected General Counsel and Secretary of Universal Corporation in February 2001, Vice President in November 2005, and President in December 2006. On August 7, 2007, the Board of Directors of Universal Corporation elected him to succeed Mr. Allen B. King as Chief Executive Officer of Universal Corporation as of April 1, 2008. Mr. Freeman was elected Chairman of the Board on August 5, 2008.
Mr. Freeman is a Director of the Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital Health Service, the Delta Waterfowl Foundation, and the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar.
W. Keith Brewer Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
W. Keith Brewer, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, has been with Universal or its predecessors for over thirty years. Mr. Brewer served as Vice President, International Processing Director of Universal Leaf Tobacco Company, Incorporated ("Universal Leaf") from 1993 to 2002, President of Universal Leaf North America U.S., Inc. from January 2002 until March 2006, and was elected Executive Vice President of Universal Leaf in March 2006 and Vice President of Universal Corporation in August 2007. In August 2008, Mr. Brewer was elected Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Universal Corporation, and in October 2011, he was elected President and Chief Operating Officer of Universal Leaf. Mr. Brewer is responsible for the Company's global tobacco operations.
David C. Moore Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
David C. Moore, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Universal Corporation, has been with Universal since 1978, and began his career in the areas of finance and international operations. He served the Company in assignments of increasing complexity and responsibility, which included oversight of the Company's administrative offices in Europe from 1999 to 2005, and became Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of Universal Corporation in April 2006. He was elected Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, effective September 1, 2008. Mr. Moore is a Certified Public Accountant.
Mr. Moore is the Immediate Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Manufacturers Association and serves on the Executive Committee and the Finance Committee. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Maymont Foundation.
Preston D Wigner Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary & Chief Compliance Officer
Preston D. Wigner, Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary & Chief Compliance Officer, joined Universal Leaf in March 2003. Prior to that time, he served as an associate with Williams Mullen, P.C. and Hunton & Williams, international law firms. Mr. Wigner was elected General Counsel and Secretary of Universal Corporation in November 2005, Vice President of Universal Corporation in August 2007, and Chief Compliance Officer in November 2007.
Robert M. Peebles joined Universal as Controller in September 2003 and was elected Vice President in April 2011. Previously, he spent ten years with CSX Corporation, including four years as Assistant Controller. He was employed with the international accounting firm of Ernst & Young LLP for seven years at the start of his career. Mr. Peebles is a Certified Public Accountant.
